FAQ

  • How do I lie in a tanning bed?
Lie flat, on your back. When you’re on your back, we recommend placing your arms several inches away from your sides with your palms up and slightly bending your knees. It is NOT recommended to roll over while in the tanning bed. We promise, you will tan evenly on the front & back. Rolling over can actually cause stress fractures in the acrylic of the tanning bed.
  • How many times a week can I tan?
At Hot Tropic Tanning you can only tan once per day.
  • What are the benefits of indoor tanning lotions?
It is vital to use skin care products made for UV tanning before & after you tan. Using a tanning lotion made for indoor tanning will help your skin absorb the UV rays. Dry skin will actually reflect UV rays. Most indoor tanning lotion sold at Hot Tropic Tanning contain anti-aging & restorative ingredients, resulting in a healthier appearance. Using a tanning lotion sold at Hot Tropic Tanning will also speed up your tanning process by increasing melanin production. It takes up to 7 minutes for your skin to start developing color. That time is brought down to 30 seconds when you use a proper tanning lotion. Using a tanning lotion will also reduce after tan odor.
  • Why don’t indoor tanning lotions contain SPF?
The SPF found in outdoor lotions block both UVA and UVB rays- which largely counteracts the benefits of indoor tanning.
  • How long should I wait to shower after sunbed tanning?
You do not have to wait to shower. However, bronzers that contain DHA are best when left on for at least 4 hours before showering.
  • Why do I sometimes see un-tanned spots and how do I avoid them?
Pressure points are a reason that some indoor tanners will notice white or un-tanned spots. To avoid this, try swapping between a lay down tanning bed & a stand up tanning bed. This will allow an allover, even tan.
  • How do I tan while protecting my skin?
All of our products are formulated to help your skin stay well-nourished and moisturized and to keep your tan glowing and vibrant. Ask your Tanning Consultant which products are the best for your skin type before you leave Hot Tropic Tanning. When showering, consider using the gentle ingredients of a tan-extending body wash. It is a great way to cleanse your skin while also nourishing and extending your tan. After showering, liberally apply one of our tan extenders. Our tan-extending lotions feature special enhancers that will make your tan stay vibrant longer while nourishing and softening skin. Be sure to drink plenty of water to nourish your skin from the inside, too, for maximum tan effectiveness.
  • How do I protect my eyes?
Wearing goggles is a MUST! Goggles protect against 99% of UVA rays & 99.9% of UVB rays. Your eyelids, regular sunglasses, towels, or other non-regulation compliant items will not filter out tanning rays. It takes a specially formulated lens to protect your eyes from tanning exposure.
  • How do I prepare for a spray tan?
Before arriving for your spray tan, it is recommended to shower, shave & exfoliate. Do NOT apply any lotion, perfume, or makeup before your session. It is also recommended to wear dark, loose fitting clothes to your spray tanning appointment.
  • I can’t get my tan to last longer? How can I do that?
Moisturize daily with a post-sunless product like the ones we carry at Hot Tropic Tanning. Beware: Drugstore lotions may contain oils and other ingredients that can shorten the life of your spray tan. Also, avoid body washes that contain harsh soaps, exfoliants or oils. These ingredients can also shorten the life of your tan. We recommend using soaps that are especially formulated to extend the life of your tan. Our favorite is the HEMPZ bodywash line. Avoid using pore strips, bandages and exfoliants (until you’re ready to spray again).
  • Will it turn me orange?
These days spray tans are formulated to counter orange undertones. Just like makeup foundations, your spray tan is customizable to match your skin and meet your tan goals. If you’re new to spray tanning, consider starting with a lighter shade and building up with color-enhancing products.
  • What should I wear in the spray tanning booth?
Once you’re set up in our private and secure tanning room, disrobe to your level of comfort. If you choose not to spray tan nude, wear a swimsuit or undergarment that you don’t mind possibly staining. Be sure to remove all jewelry and wear a protective hair cap.
  • How long do I have to wait after a spray tanning session before I can shower?
Avoid bathing, swimming (getting wet period), sweating, liquid makeup and/or lotion for at least 8+ hours after your spray tan session.
  • Do I need to cover my hair while spray tanning?
Covering your hair during your spray tan session is optional. The spray tan solution will not stain your hair, but it can make your hair slightly greasy until you shower. Hair nets are supplied at Hot Tropic Tanning, if you decide to cover your hair. WARNING * If the hair net is covering any skin it will leave a tan line.
  • How long after a spray tan session before I can put my clothes back on?
You can put your clothes back on, immediately after your spray tan session. It is recommended to wear loose fitting clothing, so that your clothing will not rub off your spray.
  • If I spray tan can I also tan in tanning beds and in the sun?
Yes! In fact we recommend it at Hot Tropic Tanning, for a more natural glow. Tanning with a spray tan will also make the fading of your spray tan, less noticeable. Spray tans do not offer any SPF.
  • Because of my fair skin I have never been able to tan before. Will the spray tan give me a tan?
    Yes, definitely!
  • What can I expect after tanning?
After sun tanning, our hope is that you feel warm & relaxed. However you may not see results immediately following your tanning session. You may feel the glow of your skin at work, but your bronze color may not be visible for several hours. In fact, it may continue developing for up to 24 hours. To nurture your skin and make sure your tan reaches its full golden color, consider investing in one of our specially formulated tan extending moisturizers.
